The answer
About twenty eight days. That is the standard age at which concrete is specified to reach its design strength, and it is the number your builder is working to whether or not they mention it.
Curing is not drying
This is the part that gets misunderstood. Concrete does not harden by drying out. It hardens through hydration, a chemical reaction between cement and water that continues for as long as water is available.
Which means a shell left to dry in a Sacramento August is not curing faster. It is curing less. The reaction stops early, the concrete reaches a lower final strength, and there is no way to restart it.
Keeping the shell wet through the cure window is the cheapest thing anybody does on a pool build. Skipping it is the most expensive.
What you will see
- Day 0. Concrete is applied and carved to profile.
- Days 1 to 7. The shell is kept damp, often watered several times a day. Most strength gain happens in this stretch.
- Days 7 to 28. Strength continues to build more slowly. Tile, coping and plaster work often runs during this period.
- Day 28. The reference point for design strength.
The one question worth asking
Ask how many times a day the shell will be watered, and by whom. A builder who has a clear answer has thought about it. A builder who has not is telling you something.
