Deck Renovation
The deck is the largest concrete surface on most properties and the one that tells you the most about how the site drains.
Decking that has heaved, cracked or settled toward the pool is usually reporting a drainage or a soil problem rather than a concrete problem. Replacing the surface without fixing what moved it produces the same deck again in a few seasons.
The joint where the deck meets the coping matters more than its size suggests. An expansion joint that has failed lets water track behind the coping and into the bond beam, which turns a deck issue into a shell issue.
Surfaces range from broom finished concrete through to stamped and coloured work, exposed aggregate, pavers and stone. The right one is mostly a question of heat underfoot, slip resistance and how much of the existing deck can stay.

We look at where water goes now and where it should go before deciding what to pour.

Remove and prepare
Failed sections come out and the base is compacted and graded.

Pour and detail
New deck is placed with the joints and slope set deliberately rather than left to chance.

Seal the joint
The deck to coping joint is detailed so water cannot track back into the bond beam.
Questions we get asked
Most pool deck cracking comes from ground movement, poor base preparation or missing control joints, rather than from the concrete itself. In the Sacramento region seasonal soil movement is a common cause. Replacing the surface alone usually reproduces the crack.
Yes when the slab is structurally sound and drains correctly. Overlays and coatings work over solid concrete. A slab that has heaved, settled or lost its base needs removing, because a coating follows whatever is underneath it.
It is an expansion joint. The deck and the pool shell move independently, and the joint absorbs that movement. When it fails, water tracks behind the coping into the bond beam, which turns a deck problem into a structural one.
