An emergency on a pool is usually water going somewhere it should not. The first job is stopping the damage, not finishing the repair.
A pool losing water faster than evaporation accounts for is undermining something. Water tracking under a deck or against a foundation causes more expensive damage than the leak itself, which is why the first visit is about containment rather than the finished repair.
Evaporation alone accounts for real water loss in a Sacramento summer, so the first thing worth doing is separating normal loss from a leak. A bucket test does that without anybody visiting: float a bucket of pool water on a step, mark both levels, and compare the drop after a day. If the pool drops further than the bucket, water is leaving the system.
Once the loss is confirmed, the source has to be found before anything is repaired. Shell, plumbing, fitting and skimmer leaks all present the same way at the water line and all need different work.

Separate a shell leak from a plumbing or fitting leak. They look identical from the surface.

Once the cause is known, repair at the structure rather than patching the symptom.

Refill and confirm the loss has actually stopped before calling it finished.

Run a bucket test. Float a bucket of pool water on a step so both are at the same temperature, mark the water level inside and outside, and compare after twenty four hours. If the pool level drops further than the bucket, you have a leak rather than evaporation.
Rapid water loss, a visible structural failure in the shell or bond beam, or water tracking toward a building foundation. Those cause damage while you wait. A cosmetic crack that holds water is not urgent and can be scheduled.
Usually not, and not without advice. An empty pool can float out of the ground when groundwater is high, which turns a leak into a replacement. Call before draining.
